If you go to Fort Worden
Fort Worden State Park: There's detailed
information on the park, including the vacation housing, on
the Washington
State Parks web site. The Web site includes a useful housing
availability calendar. Or phone the park housing office at
360-344-4434.
Washington State Parks' general Web site also has information
about other state parks that offer historic military housing
as vacation rentals, including Fort Flagler on Marrowstone
Island and Fort Columbia near Ilwaco. www.parks.wa.gov
or 800-360-4240.
Free parking: State parks began charging
a $5 daily parking fee in January. Fort Worden, thanks to
$25,000 in donations from local businesses and government
agencies, has been able to buy out the parking-fee requirement
for this year and avoid charging visitors.
Port Townsend Marine Science Center: The
center has two small buildings in Fort Worden, a marine lab
on the park's dock and a natural history building on the shore.
Both are enjoyable for children, with hands-on exhibits, but
their hours are limited in winter. The natural history building
is open Friday through Monday in winter; the lab (which has
sea creatures in touch tanks) won't reopen until April, when
it will be open on weekends through the spring. In summer,
both buildings are open daily, except Tuesdays. 360-385-5582
or www.ptmsc.org.
Commanding Officer's Quarters: The Victorian-house-turned-museum
is on Officers Row in Fort Worden State Park. It's closed
in January and February, but reopens in March on weekends.
360-344-4400.
The Coast Artillery Museum showcases the defense of Puget
Sound and military life at Fort Worden. Open on weekends through
May, then daily in summer.
Centrum: The nonprofit arts group is headquartered
at Fort Worden and offers workshops and performances, from
chamber music and jazz to dance and literary events. 360-385-3102,
www.centrum.org.
Port Townsend visitor information: The Web site www.ptguide.com
has extensive information on sites, events, accommodations
and more. Or phone the Port
Townsend Chamber of Commerce: 360-385-2722 or 888-365-6978.
